Scope of the medical education programme
Pulmonary Hypertension Diagnosis and Management is a medical education programme that has been developed to educate non-PH specialist healthcare professionals (including GPs, nurses and peripheral PH clinicians) about PH and raise awareness about the issues surrounding the management of patients with PH in the UK. It has been developed by the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) UK in conjunction with a team of PH specialists (including nurse specialists, nurse consultants, consultant physicians and pharmacists) and non-PH specialists from across the UK. The course is being run in collaboration with Edge Hill University UK.
The programme consists of one module, divided into four sections:
- What is PH?
- Diagnosis of PH
- Treatment of PH
- PH and the patient
The module is hosted online and is supported by printed workbooks for each section.
Goals of the medical education programme
The primary goals of this medical education programme are to:
- Develop your understanding of the different types of PH and its associated conditions
- Improve your ability to facilitate early and correct diagnosis of PH
- Improve the overall treatment and management of PH
- Increase your awareness of the issues facing patients with PH
Upon completion of the programme you should be able to more easily recognise the signs and symptoms of PH. This will hopefully aid the timely diagnosis of the approximately 2000 patients with undiagnosed PH in the UK, which could result in earlier treatment initiation for these patients and perhaps improved prognosis. You should also be more aware of the issues facing PH patients and their families on a day-to-day basis and therefore feel more confident in supporting them. You will also have an appreciation of the types of treatments used in PH and the complexities associated with the administration and side effects of some of these treatments.
Personal and professional development
The programme has been designed to offer personal and professional development according to your individual needs. The course can be used to gain 20 academic credits towards a degree or masters degree qualification. Alternatively, it can be used as part of your continuing professional development.
In order to gain academic credits through Edge Hill University you will need to complete a 15-week course, consisting of approximately 200 hours of learning (online and offline).
To complete the module as part of a degree or masters degree you will be required to submit an assignment to Edge Hill University for your final assessment.
At degree level, students will be required to demonstrate an application of the knowledge they’ve learnt form the programme to clinical practice situations, by submitting a 3000 word assignment.
At master’s level, students will be required to demonstrate how this knowledge could be used to improve an aspect of healthcare provision relevant to PH or improve the diagnosis and management of PH, by submitting a 4000 word assignment.
Further details about the assignment, including when and how to submit it, will be provided by a personal (course) tutor at Edge Hill University once you have registered for the programme.

Registration for the course is now available. It is recommended that the course will take 15 weeks, which includes provision for writing your assignment.
